The Crycothyroid membrane is chosen because it lies relatively superficial in the neck. There isn't too much soft tissue overlying it on the whole. The trachea also lies immediately behind it. And importantly, there generally aren't too many major vascular structures lying over it for us to hit. We'll talk about that in a bit.
