The Importance of Public Defenders in New York
Ms. Marin is a public defender within the Atlanta Judicial Circuit Public Defender's Office, and that is a solo practitioner. The question put to us today is to what degree is it appropriate or indeed vital for public defenders to be involved in political advocacy. Ms. Marin: To a high degree it is appropriate and can and has achieved some good things for indigent clients that cannot be accomplished on an individual lawyer level. But it's much harder to make the case that it's a vital because the advocacy has costs and costs that are often unacknowledged by the communities from which many indigent clients often come.
