They trained at a moderate intensity. You had olympic lifters practising the snatch, for example, throughout the day. It wasn't like they did the snatch to failure. There's lots of benefit to multiple sets at lower intensities. Not saying there isn't any benefit to high tensity. But if that's your main focus, you're going to miss out so much.
