Is Elijah the Prophet?
The jews inquire of the witness, john, asking who he is. How does he see himself fitting into the picture? Is he the christ? The awaited, anointed one and heir of david? Is he elijah? Here they refer to the figure foretold in malachi, chapter four,. Behold, i will send you elijah, the prophet. John denies that he is any of these figures. Rather, he identifies himself by appealing to a prophecy of isaiah. Hears the voice in the wilderness preparing the wayfall and heralding the lord's return home.
