The Importance of Knowing Grammar

A distinction has to be made between knowing grammar and knowing about grammar. You can certainly learn any language without knowing about the grammar of that language, or about anything else for that matter. But once again, it depends how it's done. If we just taught these rules in the abstract, as it were, without seeing how they applied to real life situations, this was always the point behind that old communicative approach to language.
