The Feminization of Women in Economics and Religion in the Seventeenth Century

There was a deeply gendered dimension to economic theology during this period. Men tended to associate pathological consumption, what they would refer to as luxury, with a kind of effeminate alure. There's a lot of displacement going on by these male clerics, a pathologizing the very luxury that they themselves are immersed in by associating with women. By the time you get to the second half of the eighteenth century, is a way in which the dynamics that had once associated first and foremost with women ha become more general propositions about economic consumption.
