If you have no color experience, no visual design xperience, keep everything monogrommatic. Monochromatic schemes are like the easiest way to elevate a design. Use those styles out of arden created. Look at designs that other people have designed using those patterns and see how they've put them together. The squint test is kind of giving you a clue at the visual hierarchy of things. It's really about practise it out and see.
