Introduction

Galileo Galilei had been the chair of mathematics at Padua University for 17 years. While a professor, he spent plenty of time in the big city carousing with his friends. He ended up falling for a woman who, because of class concerns, he felt he could not marry. But that didn't stop him from having three children with her. By 1609, Galileo was frustrated that his pay from the university remained modest while other academics were getting better compensated.
