Deny Yourself, Take Up Your Cross, and Follow Me
The New Testament writer Paul later writes about this idea of the self, and we get a lot of clarity from Paul that he uses the language of the flesh. Notice must, non-negotiable, one deny themselves, two take up their cross, and three follow me. The primary meaning of this in Jesus day was literal. It was be willing to go public with your apprenticeship to me as a result to go to death and martyrdom at the hands of Roman Empire.
