In high school, "I rejected all of the hazing and all of the traditional rituals I fought against every little bit of it" When he became a teacher in 1999, his students began pledging. He stayed silent for two seconds then started to pledge but couldn't bring himself to do it. As the words approached she said the words with her mouth but did not speak them. It was 'the smallest, most insignificant protest that there ever was'
