Is Machine Learning Making Climate Change Worse?

Some machine learning models definitely use a lot of energy to train and run in particular very large models that are used for example in NLP. This is something the field should consider when both when deciding what models to use and also how important small incremental improvements over state of the art really are. For example, self-driving cars make climate change worse. On the other hand, developing AV technology with a view to vehicle sharing and public transportation could decrease carbon emissions. AI for good isn't about adding on new, societally beneficial applications on top of business as usual. It really means a lot of subtle choices to better align our work with societal goals in lots of different ways.
