The protagonist can never be the source of the inciting incident. The inciting, inciting cident is what knocks the protagonist a life off a balance. Coincidental means that it's an emergent property of of the world. So if we're looking at ed mc mayn's story, what you described was very, very, ah, very, very good. But it was not coincidental.
