The Availability Cascade: A Self-Sustaining Chain of Events
An availability cascade is a self-sustaining chain of events, which may start from media reports and lead up to public panic. Couran and Sunstein focused on two examples that are still controversial: the Love Canal Affair and the so-called A-LAR scare. They comment that in the social context, all heuristics are equal, but availability is more equal than the others. The importance of an idea is often judged by the fluency and emotional charge with which it comes to mind.
