There is a difference between free range meditation and formal practice. You can turn anything you're doing into meditation, just by paying attention to it. The other thing i love about the one minute counts is that the one minute doesn't necessarily have to be you in the lotus position with your family around you. I think that's a better way to spend 20 seconds than just singing happy birthday, or neurotically worrying about any number of things.
