The reason we're not making big innovations and breakthroughs isn't because we're idolatrous to the past, but because we've actually devalued it too much. The sort of movie version of this that always gets me is Marlon Brando, wild ones. He doesn't really stand for anything other than the antiquarian stands for anything else than a love of the past. Gerard actually thinks that in modernity, industry, business is actually much more innovative than the arts, the humanities or philosophy.
