It was a widespread christian belief that the jews had to accept christ before the second coming could happen. So they demanded that jews convert. Some did, some fused, some fled. And of those who refused, many were killed, and their goods and money were requisitioned by these crusading crowds. The attacks on jews could serve as a way of solidifying and hardening these makeshift armies preparing to become fighting forces.
