The Paradox of Hip Hop in Culture

Hip hop is the most universal language, but still has that capacity to be counter-cultural. How can hip hop maintain that dual position of being authentic and counterculture? I don't have the answer to that. There are some interesting approaches to beginning to understand that kind of duality in thinking through ideas of decorum and taste.
