In 1948, a major supermarket held a chicken of tomorrow contest. 40 finalists submitted 720 eggs to a central hatching facility. They were fed, raised, monitored in closely controlled conditions for 12 weeks. Then the survivors were slaughtered and judged. Most chickens being raised at industrial scale have a genetic link to that contest.
