The Importance of Classical Learning for Artists
Pliny has large numbers of anecdotes about Greek and Roman artists, which demonstrates that they were regarded very highly in terms of their intellectual status. The retrieval of classical learning was essentially ingredient, wasn't it? Yes. So actually going to Rome as it existed then and copying the buildings into drawing, which then became paintings and so on,. And the manuscripts which came through Greek scholars coming to Europe at that time... It really affected their understanding of the ancient world. To go to Rome was, and always has been, since, an ideal for the artist.
