Parmoyl and soy, two other ingredients often found in these meat substitutes, also don't have the best track record for deforestation. Farmers use a synthetic version of manure to fertilize their crops which turns into nitrous oxide. All that processing accounts for roughly a fifth of a meat substitute's carbon footprint.
