The Importance of Atonement in German Identity

The West German identity during the Cold War was built on the foundation of atonement. At some point they realized we have to examine ourselves and make sure this never happens again. And so it became part of German identity. The East Germans were merged into that identity, not always successfully. But I think the United Nations agreed that we're going to build our iconography around that idea of atonement - 'never again'
