The case for regret

The Gray Area with Sean Illing

CHAPTER

Why Do We Have Negative Emotions?

If we have systematic ways to deal with our negative emotions, they ove our life. The emotion of regret at a very, very reductive level is that it can make us better negotiators and strategists. And more important, it can deepen our sense of meaning in life. If we left people to their own devices and said, your partner, your wife, your husband, died, se, that's an incredibly difficult situation. But we don't have that. We have systematic ways, processes, rituals to deal with that negative emotion of grief that helps people make sense of it,. That helps people go beyond it and, where possible, derive meaning from it.
