How Do You Cryopreserve Bone Marrow?

The process begins with what's called debriding, which is where you sort of clean the bone and remove soft tissue. We use a centrifuge to separate the different cell types. And then they're put into a minus 80 freezer while we send samples out for testing just to confirm that the final product is suitable for transplant. Once those test results come back, we move the cells from the minus 80 freezer to long term cryostorage at around negative 190 C.
