Christian kept the Cavendish cyclotron running during war time because all the physicists were either a chock river or, you know, other bits of the Manhattan project. Christian was the only person in India who knew how to build, well, not so much build, but run, maintain and use a cyclotron. He's incredibly good with his hands. I mean, he says something to the effect that this is the best Indian student I have had who is able to work with their hands.
