The French Didn't Look at What We Didn't Go
There was an enormous distrust inherent in french society. The leaders of the french revolution basically undermined the social order and try to replace it with something that they have imagined, based largely on theories of rousseau. Of the left wing, a robespere saint, just a danton to occupy centre stage. But it's a series of mistakes. There also there was a lot of difficulty trying to deal with democratic institutions in a country which had no experience of large scale voting.
