What Happens Globally With Climate Change?
There are more than 20 million cloud to ground lightning strikes annually in the lower forty eight states alone. A modelling paper estimated that global lightning flash rate could actually decrease with climate change. But other papers have estimated the exact opposite, an increase of anywhere from four to 16%. It's not as simple as temperature equals lightning; there is definitely a strong theoretical possibility that warmer global temperatures can result in greater lightning frequency.
