Food markets have been around since the very earliest days of new amsterdam. The city has done various things over the years to regulate these markets, including constructing market halls. And then meanwhile, in the mid nint teenth century, a new form of independent food seller, the pushcart vender, brought bargains of all types, edible and non edible,. But they packed especially tightly into neighborhoods with the largest immigrant populations. So how did that plan turn out? We're going to focus our attention to day on one of those markets in particular: the essex street ket on the lowere side, which opened in 19 forty.
