The Effects of MDMA on Sleep

David Perry's first PhD study was on MDMA and it was an important one. He used trip to found depletion, a dietary manipulation that staves you of essential amino acid which is the precursor of serotonin in the brain. So we starved people of that precursor of serotonin so depleted their serotonin levels and then recorded their sleep. It was a way to stress the serotonin system in MDMA users and match controls to see whether MDMA users had damaged serotonin systems. They didn't - they had the same quality sleep as other people.
