The Christian Revolution: A Pilgrim's Journey
In the high Middle Ages, in the work of my intellectual hero, Thomas Aquinas, God is not a being. As God comes close to us, we're not overwhelmed or destroyed, we're enhanced. But that got lost at a certain point philosophically. Think of the rise of nominalism and so on. I think there is a trajectory from the loss of Aquinas' metaphysical view of God to atheism. The fact that we can say Jesus is truly divine and truly human makes possible a real humanism,. total respect for human freedom, et cetera.
