David Wheeler: What were the anomalous phenomena or deficits in physics at the time that motivated the development of quantum theory? Werner Heisenberg: The most glaring thing is just the fact of the stability of atomic matter. And then as David says, later on, you had the Bohr theory of the atom and then you had these problems with weight radiation. A lot of it is just electromagnetics plus thermodynamics at the time didn't work empirically.
