Putin's wars is kind of the story of a leader defined by the conflicts that he's engaged in. Putin was pushing back against what had been happening in the 1990s where there was a sense Russia was marginalized, despised and ignored because it was weak. So on the one hand, war fighting is important to him and his vision of the state. And for that to really be effective every now and then you actually have to assert your capabilities.
