NIAB's History Matters
We've gone back in a time machine, grabbed the first wheat and then brought it back into the present to cross with modern varieties. Why does this history matter? A lot of people would be interested in wheat's future, not wheat's past. But wheat's future can be so much richer if we have access to this diversity that was lost along the way in the past. Since Covid, it's much more intuitive to people that diseases change. It's this work, the effort to bring diversity back into the global wheat crop and our daily bread, which led the judges in this year's BBC Food and Farming Awards to select Phil and his colleagues at NIAB as finalists for Best
