The Constitution Is Not to Be Obedienced or Disobeyed
In the weeks that followed the decision, witnesses across the country suffered hundreds of physical attacks. Like wars, though pandemics often produce demanding new social rules aimed at protecting collective interests. With those rules can come fear and anger at individuals unable to conform for ligious reasons. The court allowed states to shutter houses of worship, while allowing casinos, movie theatres and other favored businesses to remain open.
