Science and the State

There's been no separation of science and state for a long time, he says. And it also strikes me that states are fundamentally interested in science being a discipline of truth seeking truth with a capital T. In the 19th century, Charles Darwin never had a government job or an academic post or a state grant. He funded his own research and was very, very independent. But if we were having this conversation in the 1860s or 70s, there would have been lots of examples of people who weren't working within state institutions.
