The Year of the Republic of China
In 1912, the Chinese could have chosen a system of continuous years using a Chinese alternative to the birth of Jesus. But these had problems so they decided to start counting from year one. This would not change with a new president as per a new emperor. The ROC-era numbering system just happens - by chance - to be the same numbering system used by North Korea.
