In the TH3-plus model, wild-type fetuses had significant iron loading and reduced intraurean growth. The authors linked these outcomes to maternal iron-induced changes in fetal hepsidin in the liver, and fer reportin in the placenta. It is clear that new clinical strategies to mitigate the risks of complications during pregnancy with beta thalassemia are needed.
