There's a lot of cross cutting between those storylines. We also see the remind me of the wall of gloves from episode one. I'm thinking we may presume we know that Cassian is not going to spend his full six-year term on this planet. If this is five BBY, then it's physically impossible to die on Scarif. So it's impossible for him to be. He needs to be K2SO and become a captain of the Rebel Alliance.
