Jim didn't realize anything was really wrong at first. Russell became a frequent figure in his life hanging out with the family occasionally and then taking Jim off to isolated construction sites or other places where he could park the car. Eventually Russell abandoned him presumably because he got too old and Russell was you know a pedophile. The whole situation was just a huge mind fuck for young Jim as you can imagine.
