What Are the Effects of Not Serving in the Military?

When I grew up we had military service in the Netherlands, of course that was a little different. So there was one lucky birthday in 1959 where people didn't have to serve in the military and the year before and afterwards everybody in principle had to serve. And so what you see then much later, here we looked at earnings in 1990 where these people were in the middle of their careers after the military service. We see that a group in the middle, this 1959 birth cohort, actually made considerably more money than the people born in 1958 or the people Born in 1960. You see that these people just make significant more money. And so that seems very plausible that it comes from not having to serve
