The last thing we want is for the primary vision of AI in the public mind to be a robot hunting some small child down and blowing into pieces. It's been difficult to get the professional societies, which are IEEE, ACM and AAAI, to come around to this idea that they should have a policy. But if you look at American physical society, they have policies on nuclear weapons. So it's perfectly normal for scientific societies to take a stand.
