The Importance of Pluralism in Austria
Austrian modernism, like the Nationalist movements, was largely rooted in a disillusionment with liberalism. The new Reichstag had 516 MPs, of which 254 were Slavs, 231 Germans, 19 Italians, 6 Romanians, and 5 Jews. But ideologically the results were extremely fragmented. And more and more as the empire democratized it also began to seem ungovernable.
