Hubble's Yardstick
The discovery of variable stars allowed scientists to make the known universe way bigger. Hubble discovered by looking at a lot of distant galaxies is that other galaxies are moving away from us. This was actually really huge. Up until this point, Scientists had this pretty clear consensus about the universe.
