How to Change a Habit

Habits emerge because the brain is constantly looking for these ways to save effort. If you're not following the right process it's hard to get out of those routines you've already formed. The MIT researchers found that as a routine became more and more habit, they started to see a pretty consistently shaped graph. With a first spike there was a cue. This is the trigger that tells your brain to go into automatic mode and which habit to use. Second there's the routine, which can be physical, mental or emotional. And then finally the third step is a reward. And this helps the brain figure out if this particular loop that it's already on is worth remembering for the future.
