Introduction

Bonnie Bastler is a Howard Hughes investigator and professor at the molecular biology department at Princeton. Bonnie's work has been revolutionary for our understanding of how bacteria communicate with one another in order to orchestrate group behaviors such as emitting of light or attacking a much larger host. Her lab found that not only does each species of bacteria have its own private language they also share a universal language which Bonnie calls a bacterial Esperanto. In science as in any other creative spheres of life it often takes quite a long time and a lot of effort to make fundamental contributions.
