Are Silences So Uncomfortable?

i wonder if there's any way we can think of to deal with the whole lull awkward silence thing. Why is it so uncomfortable? My theory is that i need somehow be providing value to the other person, right? If neither of you are saying anything to each other, then your mental model is that i'm not providing value to them. I've actualy had that loads of times, where there's like a lull in the conversation,. and i feel like the need to fill it. And i fill it by saying somthing really stupid, or something that leads down like a non productive path of conversation That ends up with me landing my foot in my mouth.
