He'd recently gotten two letters from her, and he wanted to promptly respond so she wouldn't worry about him. To soften that disappointment, he included a lock of his hair in the envelope as well as a highcoup poem, if i think of you as ordinary passion dictates. Of course, an english translation doesn't really do justice to what was likely very beautiful phrasing in the original japanese. At least that's my interpretation. But hi
