Cheryl Williams had reason to be suspicious about her daughter-in-law from early on. Denise Merrill remarried Mike's best friend Brian Winchester five years after he went missing. Her life insurance policies were valued at roughly $1.75 million, of which she was the sole beneficiary. Having Mike declared illegally dead had allowed Denise to claim on these within six months of him going missing.
