The Importance of Open Ports to Foreign Traders
British love of tea was causing some big problems in the late 18th century. Tea had once been a luxury good, but had become an everyday necessity. The Chinese wanted little in return from the British. So they had to pay for the tea with precious silver. Something needed to be done to end this trade imbalance with China.
