My father thought t that i had an ability, he could see, to write a little bit. I also was working on saturdays a layaway department store in a bad part of town. My father rightly feared for my future and got me an interview for a job as a copy boy at age 16. The washington evening star, at that time, was probably the greatest evening paper in america.
