The Meaning of Spite in the Ancient World
In the ancient world, healers operated in all kinds of ways. They would use saliva or spittle to heal individuals. Sometimes physicians would actually use this to treat wounds or other ailments. It's likely that Jesus used spittle as a way to demonstrate his power as a healer and that this was a way that they could understand who he was.
